i love board games...especially the classics:
-monopoly
-life
-candyland
-chutes and ladders
-sorry
-clue and clue FX (both fun:)
plus, with these games there is a variation in age groups. plus, i think they can all be bought at wal-mart, so that can save some money.
there is another game that i LOVED growing up...however, i think it may be a challenge to find.
it's called "park and shop" and i used to play it with my grandma. i think it was from the 50's b/c the directions are geared to women (not players) and it's all about parking your car and moving your peice to each shop and buying a product there.
it's fun, plus it taught me logical thinking....i'm a pro at running errands b/c i know how to figure out the best order to stop at each place:)
she found this exact game for me for my last birthday, but i don't know how she found it.....i doubt it was on-line since she can't even turn on a computer, but you could try!
take care!
AH! i found a link to my old favorite and many more!!

The games I would choose for kids now didn't exist when I was a kid. I have seen some great games for kids lately. Gulo Gulo is a dexterity game in which kids usually beat adults. Igloo Pop (and it's ancestor, Zapp Zerapp) are irresistable - you start shaking those little bead-filled igloos and the whole room gathers around. You might also want to check out Blokus, Snorta, Diamant and For Sale. Unfortunately most of these games are mail order only.

Monopoly was a favorite. Our whole family played it and sometimes we played for 5 nights before someone won. Now a fun game to play which isn't really a board game but is great to play with several people is Dominoes.

Go, it is one of the oldest strategy game played in its original form. It is encourages creativity and is very easy to learn (simpler rules than chess) and more complex than chess ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_complexity ) even an amature can beat the best computer.
If chess is a battle, then Go is war.
"The rules of Go are so elegant, organic and rigorously logical that if intelligent lifeforms exist elsewhere in the universe they almost certainly play Go." ~ International Chess Master, Edward Lasker

What about Risk, Sorry, and Concentration. ( Ya know, the one that you try to put the shapes in and it pops up if you run out of time) Trouble, Hungry Hippos, Simon. Those are all GREAT games for kids.

Definitely Chess.
It's a very intellectual game. It stimulates your mind and makes you have sharper focus.
Chess can be played by anybody regardless of age, gender, color, religion, etc.
Other possible games:
Games of the Generals
Scrabble
Snakes and Ladders
Chinese Checkers

Robo Rally ... logic thinking is required, yet there is always the chance someone elses plans wreck havoc to your careful planning.
Even though it involves lasers, crushers and all sorts of vicious weaponry I consider it a non violent game ... since it's only a few bored computers playing games.

If you prefer the strategic/warfare type of games then check into "A Game of thrones" ... incredibly rich background story
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Game_of_Thrones_%28board_game%29
the game is inspired by the book of the same name

cheers
Power Grid is pretty cool too
