The date changes at night because it is more convenient for us humans to have it that way, and humans determined when the date changes.

Think about it--how'd you like to have to look at your watch to tell if it were Sunday or Monday?

the meridian is 0 longitute. the international date line is 180 longitude. well each time zone is broken down into 15 degree segments (larger or smaller depending on cities and such). well at 15 degree increments the world is divided into 24 standard time zones. once again variations are made for populated areas. according to my understanding of kindergarden math, when you reach the end you start over again. so at 23:59 anywhere in the world, as soon as 1 minute passes instead of the clock reading 24:00, it will read 00:00. remember, 00:00 (military) (12:00am)-00:59 (12:59am) is still considered the first hour of the day.

OK...date change I don't think has much to do with the meridian...I think it has to do with how we came up with ways to measure time to now when to grow the crops. In ancient time...the sun was a god, and died everyday to be reborn again when the sun came up. I think the date changes at night because of that, even though with science we know why we have night and day. It's culture.

The prime meridian (0 longitude)(noon)runs through Greenwich England. When in is noon in Greenwich it is midnight at the international dateline(180 longitude)(midnight). The date changes at midnight. Well after midnight to be more accurate. It was decided to do it that way since most business are closed at midnight that way daily transactions would occur in the same day.
