Princess Leia is the obvious one.
It depends on how much you want to attract nerdy guys really. If you are looking for love, definitely go with the gold bikini/return of the jedi look ;o) or "leeloo" from the fifth element (although you'd have to be brave to wear either!!). If you want to pull an uber-nerd consider hiring an old star trek outfit (ie the one with the short skirt)
If you are going for humour aim towards characters from Doctor Who. Anything will do if it involves cardboard boxes and tinfoil!
If you want ease get an old t-shirt and rip the front out of it near the stomach...add lots of fake blood and generally rough yourself up...et voila, a victim from "aliens".
For the ultimate cop-out, throw a white sheet over your head and cut out two eyes - you've just become "ET" in the Halloween scene.
Sci-fi fancy dress is actually quite hard because it involves pumping quite a lot of money into your costume. Its probably cheaper to find a local fancy dress shop - the one near me hires full costumes for less than £20. But if its quite a casual party, definitely go with the tinfoil/cardboard box approach.

Additional: i saw the comment that a sci-fi costume could be very expensive, but if you are a little crafty you may not be to bad off. For a borg you could paint on part of the costume, or better yet buy craft foam, cut out your pieces, paint, then use some body adheisive. You could also take a part an unwanted electroic (or buy one at the goodwill) and make use of the wires and microchips inside to add a little realism to your costume.

You could get some rolls of tin foil and be inventive. Papier mache is easy to make - depending on how long you've got to do it. Make yourself an aliens head and wear it with a boiler suit.

You could stick a sink plunger to a dustbin, put the dustbin over your head and put on some roller skates and go as a Dalek ....
If there is a prize be sure to wear nothing under the dustbin as your 'ace in the hole' :-)
