I LOVE all my carriers and DS is 20 lbs now. You can wear your baby as long as you are physically able to. Soem carriers like the Byorn have less weight limit. They also don't carry your baby in a very good position, so I wouldn't recommend them.
Here are some of my favorites- I don't recommend a front facing carrier, or if you do use it front facing, only for short times. It is really easy for them to get overstimulated facing out and have no way to shut that stimulation off. If they are facing you they can still look around, but can rest their head on you to escape from all the visual noise if they need it. Also, when front facing often the baby is dangling from their crotch.... not good. When facing you they should be in a seated position with their bum lower than their knees.
www.ergocarrier.com The Ergo is good for long walks/hikes. You can wear it on your back or front, and it is "masculine" enough that my husband will wear it out in public. :-) You can wear a kid in these for a long time.
A Mei Tai style carrier is similar to an ergo cause you wear it on both shoulders opposed to a sling. I love the Baby Hawk (www.babyhawk.com) ones. They can be expensive, but they are gorgous, custom carriers. You can wear it on the front or the back. You can wear a kid in this until they are 3,4,5 years old!
There are many great slings, the most versatile is probably a ring sling. www.zolowear.com has really nice ones.
Wraps can be nice, too... but they have somewhat of a learning curve. www.mobywrap.com www.gypsymama.com
The pp who said you should hold and cuddle instead of carry probably isn't thinking about carrying in the way many moms do. It is a way to go about your everyday business with your baby. I still take my son out and play with him, but I also put him in the carrier and do the dishes, vaccume, fold laundry, etc. and he really enjoys seeing me do everyday things. Plus, a carrier is better than a stroller because the baby is up at adult level watching adult interaction- learning about conversation, watching moms facial expression and how she reacts to other people ad the world around her.
I love my carriers!

I highly recommend getting a sling! It is much easier on your back than a bucket carseat carrier or one of those strappy "Baby Bjorn" packs that hurt your shoulders.
You can use a sling even with a large toddler. It is great for those times when you are walking through a store or park and the toddler gets tired and wants to be carried... just pop out the sling, and keep going!
It keeps the baby close to your body so he feels snug and secure. It also discourages strangers from groping your baby and grabbing their hands. What is UP with that? My baby's going to stick that hand right in his mouth, and how do I know what germs you just gave him? Ick.
It's WAY easier to use than wrestling a big old stroller around, and takes up less room.
I have personally used my sling until my child was almost 3 and over 25 pounds.

A baby carrier, or a bucket carseat?
An infant carseat should be used until the baby's head is taller than the back of the seat, or the straps are no longer above his shoulders. He should remain rear facing though until 1 year AND 20 lbs.
A baby carrier, like a Snugli or a sling, you should be able to use until your child is about 3 years old. It depends on the type of sling. Check www.wearyourbaby.com for more info on the different types of ways to wear your baby.

When my baby hit 15 pounds, I had to switch carriers, but I'm still carrying her at 20+ pounds and more than a year. I know people who carry their three year olds in carriers, so it's not too late! And it's super convenient for lots of applications (the bus... housework...)
I would recommend a mei tai (Asian-style baby carrier) or a wrap (although, while wraps are awesome, they're best if you have someone to help you learn how) for a baby your size, but check out the links for more info.

I used a sling and was able to carry my kids till the age of 2, we also have a hiking backpack that will carry them until 30 kg (about 66lbs). The sling was wonderful on the bus, I could even nurse standing up!

Do you mean a sling?
You can use most slings up to 30 or 40 lbs.
My kids were all still riding in slings at age 2 to 2.5 years.

Usualy the rule is over 20lbs and able to sit up by self. Thats what my Sons pediatrition told me, also what my sisters kids pediatrition told her...
Most car seats that are not infant carseats start at around 20lbs. If you doctor oks it its probably ok to start as logn as baby can properly sit up. a 15lb carrier and a 18lb baby makes a heavy load..
