I think for the most part our generation does care. However, with the current policy and political structure set up it is virtually impossible for people of our generation to make a difference. Just look at the 911 conpiracy movement. A recent USA today poll suggested that a good portion of Americans believe that our government had a hand in 911. That number greatly increases when a survey of the average college student is taken. The important question is then why don't we do something about it? Besides the information campaign readly available on the internet, there is not much one can do to engender a signficant change in workings of our current political infastructure. This realization creates exteme Frustration. In effect the frustration acts to disengage us from our political concerns. Therefore, it is not that our generation doesn't give a rats *** but it is so frustrated at its inablity to affect change it rather divert its energy to something else such as the pursuit of enjoyment. Would you rather spend a lifetime fighting a battle you will almost certainly loose or would you rather enjoy life?
The media further exacerbates the situation by exploiting our natural human competitive instinct by preoccupying the minds of young Americans from birth with materialistic and superficial desires such as fancy cars and physical beauty. In order words the average person in today's generation is so concerned with his own image and possessions in comparison with others that he has no time to think about where the world around him is headed. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist but this diverted attention affords a government an ideal mechanism to control its people.

In the 60s and 70s young people seem to have been more radical, but perhaps they felt that there were so many things about society that needed changing, not just the issue of the war in Vietnam.
Idealism, music, musicians and yes, drugs too all played their part in bringing people together to protest on the streets and demand change.
Don't be so hard on yourself - it's important that people care but maybe there are new ways for new voices, such as the Internet, which is little more than a dozen years old in commercial terms, where people with something to say might reach an even bigger audience.

I think that the in past,
for example the 60's
it was more obvious or overt because it was a greater shift and transition from a more constricting society.
for example the large baby boom generation discovering drugs, rock and roll, Civil rights and war.
this generation is far from that more constrictive past, and believes or wants to believe that there is no cause left.
The news has become entertainment, not information. The fourth estate and press have lost thier centralization.
instead their is a mass and vast competition for information and truth which although in theory good, leaves the average joe lost for any sense of truth.
I also think that it is a product of philosophy of no taxes, no welfare, no this no that, ect ect........no one cares about anything or anyone. and Religion has been distorted into a new political machine. the counter culture is what hip hop, the radio plays the party girls and crunk, while the message, the politicaly empowering isn't.
it is always easier to have fun and think about one selves.
this president ask the nation not to sacrifice in a time of war....no no no ..that isn't the republican way.....
instead he tells you to go shopping.
about the 90's things were good, so people felt that slaker thing....things are now bad...and people can only take so much.

Ugh. I hate it. I'm in my late 20s and trying to get people rallied and organized to fight. Or, heck at least protest. But, I'm left with the generation of my parents somewhere in their 50s or even later. Some even have a hard time getting around but they make time for civic matters.
I guess our generation doesn't care about the world around them. They are too busy obtaining cell phones, jewellery, and fashionista clothing that Paris Hilton is wearing.
We're a shallow generation.

Yes i also think so that our generation has become passive towards society they think only for themselves. day by day we r getting materialistic. the main reason being so is that the emotions r dying down. I do agree with u that there should be a revolution and offcourse we could handle that the only thing that we need is a will power.

I have to say "your generation", I guess, because I am in my 30's. Anytime I say "your generation", please do not take it personally. ;)
But, my thoughts, anyway...
You answered your question. Your generation is, as you said, lazy, stupid, and ill prepared (for what though?). I don't like the word stupid, I would rather say ignorant...mostly because your generation is so damn worried about their MySpace profile or the newest Razr phone. Take away your cell phones, and you have the most scared bunch of adults around.
And lazy? Whoooo, buddy. I have been browsing these questions, and most of your generation is so damn caught up about physical and material attributes that you have failed to see what lies ahead. No one will give a rat's *** about your MySpace profile when you are 55. Will you have Social Security? Will you have Medicare? Will you care at that point, or is it then that you will go crying to your government?
As for worst prepared, like I said, that depends on what you mean. Do you mean from physical attacks from other countries? Securing your investments?
I would love to see a political revolution in this country. We need to take back our government. Take back our financial security we work so damn hard to live off of. Most of all, we need to take back our dignity.
I like to think that "mob mentality" (ohmygawd if she has one, I need one!) and media are mostly to blame. If it's on CNN, then it must be hot/in style/cool.
Looks like you and I will have our ducks in a row. More people from your generation need to actually sit down with your parents and grandparents, and find out what life really is, and should be.
(Like I said, this isn't a personal attack!)
Way to go on bringing this issue to a head! Thumbs up!

That is called consumed society. People are individualistic and care only for their little world. We live in a materialistic, consumed society. We have to buy things to feel better. We have to buy things to build or change our identity almost every day. People don't follow politics because they feel weak and they think they can't change things on batter. Why they feel like that? Because individualistic society doesn't support groups, connections. For individualistic society it is a perfect an individualist who has no family and little friends. This person will work harder, will not protest and he will be satisfied with buying materialistic things.

Every generation is different. I'm in the same as you, but I don't think we're lazy- just different. I believe we work smarter, not harder.
Look back to our grandparents. They put in 10-12 hour days in the blistering heat and freezing cold, and had many different obstacles than you and I. We have automaticed this and that, where as our forefathers didn't have those luxuries.
I think we just go about things different, thanks to advances in technology. Not lazy.
