It's all about photo reference. The nice thing about fantasy is that no one is going to nail you for being inaccurate.

Find a photo of a pose you want to draw, sketch it, then look up fish, butterflies, bats, and observe how the creatures are constructed and how the muscles and joints would function if they were attached to your human model.

To study one of the finest artist in this field look to Frank Frazetta. Even after his stroke and the lost of the artistic use of his right hand, he produces work equal to or greater than any I ever seen. Also try a "G**GLE" search under "fantasy art." This is a subject near and dear to my heart. And Frank Frazetta stoke this fire.
