Wow, that has to be one of the more thought-provoking questions on Yahoo Q&A I've run across.
I have to say the most important person and thing kind of coenside- Our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, and his abitly to keep our country united.
Most other President's would have crumbled under the enormence pressure Lincoln was under. He had issues with the South and slavery and money, and the North and industry. He was, quite simply, stuck between a rock and hard place. And somehow, he managed to pull it off.
And he had a great plan for Reconstruction but some stupid actor decided to kill him so that went down the tubes, but still, imagine if a different (not as smart) President was in office during that time, and had made some really bad judgements. He may have allowed the South to suceed without a war, or could have made some miscalculations during the war which could have cost the North from winning the Civil War. Just think how different our country would have been today......
But of course, there is a lot to choose from. Harry Turman and dropping the Atomic Bomb on Hirioshima and Nagiasaki. If he hadn't made such a bold move, Japan may have only gotten stronger and possibly could have shifted the tide in the war. Plus, it showed that the USA wasn't scared to use nucular force, forcing other countries (the ex Soviet Union in particular) to backdown and possibly avoiding future wars.
Or you can go as recent as 9/11 and how it changed America so drastically, changing our outlook on terrorisim in the world and changing our preceptions of other people (most in particular of Middle Eastern decent).
Just some stuff off the top of my head.

This is too general a question. American history is too general a topic. You need to define some aspect of American History such as economic, industrial, social, etc. Sorry, but that is the problem since American History even though relativley short compared to other countries that have been around for centuries, but America History is very complex. One can argue for American History or the US becoming a Super Power was influenced in a sense by Oppenheimer since he headed up the Manhattan Project which gave us the Atomic Bomb. But he only acted upon information acquired from Fermi, Einstein and a few others. But, again, he would not have done this if the political impetus of FDR had not caused the Manhattan Project to be created on December 6th [yes before we even enered WWII], 1941. And going in a circle, FDR wanted it to happen because of a letter he received that was written by Fermi and others and signed by Einstein. So, if you change your question to something a little more specific, you may have an easier time of arriving at an answer. Good luck.

George Washington and the framers of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
They were breaking away fromEnglis tyranny, wanted to set up a free way of life and did it BRILLIANTLY. These men were brilliant, studied world philosophy and government and came up with the greatest nation and framework of government ever.
Bicameralism. branches with checks and balances, separation of church and state, state and local governments and laws, local representation, a document for final reference (the Constitution) and on and on...
The worth of this accomplishment and establishment of the U.S. is immeasurable.
