should i write an ending i'm not happy with, just to make my readers happy, or should i go with what feels right to me, in spite of what others want?

critics are just that, critics

Write what feels best for you, it is your story. Some will like and some won't.

When you write the ending that feels right to you, I guarantee you that readers will know it's truth and rightness and understand where you're coming from. You have to follow your own lead and not apologize for it. You respect your readers by not pandering to them, and readers are almost always smarter than they get credit for. Chances are, the people who've read what you've written so far while you aren't even sure how to end the story are people close to you who may want you to play it safe. Follow your own heart and tell the story that needs to be told.

You are writing to sell your work.

But, many books that are written are not popular at the time, yet go on to become classics later. Like Jean Rhys.

Do you want to sell books, or do you want to write what you really want to write? If you are not happy with the ending, it will probably show up in the work. A very good writer will probably get away with it. A poor writer will not be able to make it passable.

I do not think your readers are writting the book. You write what you want for if you don't the ending will not be or feel right.

People understand that feeling right? Where if it ended any other way, it wouldn't have been right?

Go with what you want. The best writers have never been afraid of writing what THEY want, and forcing the audience to deal with it. It's a lot more respectable that way.

Could you really live with the finished work that you arent happy with, just for the sake of keeping narrow minded people happy?

It happens in life all the time - what we truly desire is not what the majority wants. I want to study this subject but my parents/peers thought otherwise. I gave in to them. I want to see this movie but the rest of the friends/group want another one. Situations whereby we (the individual) stay unhappy to please the majority.

If you already know what your audience wants (in your case) and if you want the book to be popular, guess you'll have to give in to them and give them the ending they want. Or stay a true writer and finish the book the way you want it, and probably no one reads it!

How about doing something different - ends the story with 2 endings :-)

i think you should write what you want...most endings to storys are unpleasing but thats what makes it intersting and makes a story wondeful, the fact that is has a twist and dosent always go the readers way !

if you dont write the ending that you want then you are betraying your readers
if you write an ending that you dont believe in then people aree going to see that because you will subconcisal have a harder time writing it

A wise man (or woman) has many counselors... it certainly doesn't hurt to objectively look at the feedback you recieve... but who is your intended audience? The folks that have read your story... would they fit your reader profile? But.... even if they don't... and they don't neccessarily like the ending... fine... some will, some won't, so won't. You can't please everyone... You just have to ask yourself... is your goal to please your readers...or simply evoke emotional response...regardless of what kind of response...?...? Good luck.

Write what feels right to you...it is your book. It is entirely possible & probable that other people might not like the other ending either. You are not going to please everybody so you might just as well please yourself. And I would venture to say that what feels right to you is the very best ending.

Write it as you feel it. Let your writing be an extention of you...not of somebody else.
