Yes, it is easy. I just painted a room last weekend.

As another writer mentioned, preparation is 90% of the job. The other half is doing the painting. ;-)

Cover the floors with plastic tarps. Remove all switch and outlet plate covers, and ceiling light fixtures.

Wash the walls & ceiling with a dilute solution of TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) in a gallon of warm water and a drop or two of liquid dish soap. Wash a few square feet at a time and rinse with clear water. Change your rinse water frequently, and the TSP water from time to time. Use two different rags or sponges. If you have greasy walls or surfaces, it will take probably two cleaning cycles. Same if the rooms were used by heavy smokers.

Wash the woodwork as well. Let everything dry well - use rags or old towels if necessary.

Fill all cracks and holes with drywall joint compound ('spackle') using a small putty knife to apply and smooth. After it dries, use a damp sponge to smooth out any high spots in the joint compound - no need to do extensive sanding.

Painting sequence
You want to paint light colors first, then darker colors. Ceilings, then walls. And finally trim and woodwork.

Use blue masking tape (it has a low tack adhesive) to mask off woodwork around doors and windows, baseboards or ceiling trim if you will be painting those different colors.

A primer is needed if your final color will go over a darker existing color. Use the same primer mfr as your final paint mfr - the paint systems will be sure to be compatible.

Cutting in
Using a 2" wide angle cut good-quality brush, paint around the doors, windows, woodwork & trim, along both sides of each vertical corner, and where the ceiling meets each wall. This makes roller paint go much faster. Apply paint in smooth strokes, starting in an unpainted section and working your way back to end in a wet painted area, lifting the bristles so you don't leave brush marks.

Clean the brush well in warm soapy water, rinse well. Spin out the water and shape the brushes. Wrap in clean newspaper to let the bristles dry without getting folded or bent.

Roller painting
Using a fresh, clean roller, paint the ceiling, then the farthest walls, then the walls working towards your door. Apply paint in a small area, say 3 ft by 3 ft at a time, using a W pattern to outline and fill in. A telescoping pole on the handle helps do the ceiling and higher parts of the wall. If you need to end painting at night or take a long break, stick the used roller in a couple of grocery-sized plastic bags and store in the refrigerator, up to overnight. Remove and let them warm up before reuse. When you are done, just throw the roller covers out - don't bother to clean them.

After all the painting is finished, carefully remove the tape (not more than 48 hrs after first applying.) Re-install electric cover plates and ceiling lights.

Stand back and admire your handiwork.

You will need drop cloths, a ladder, a 2" wide brush, a roller and roller cover, a roller tray and screen.... and paint. One gallon covers about 400 square feet. Plan on doing two coats.

The screen is a metal mesh that covers the slanted ramp of the roller tray. It helps distribute the bain on the roller and also helps get rid of drips.

First you paint around the edges, and around things like light switches, with a brush... that's called "cutting in", in painting lingo. Then fill up the roller tray and load up your roller. Get it as full of paint as you can, but evenly so, and then roll it gently on the screen to remove globs that can drip.

Do an area of about 4 feet by four feet. First roll out a big V or W, then paint horizontal and then vertically to fill in your 4x4 square. The big mistake that people make is trying to do too big an area with one loading of the roller. If you press hard to try to squeeze paint out of the nap and paint a large area, you'll end up with streaks and roller marks.

Just press gently, and then when the 4' square is covered, go over it with light strokes to even it out. Each new area should overlap the one before it just a bit.

Usually, a second coat makes your job look much better. The second coat goes faster than the first, for some reason... and often you don't have to cut in the second time around.

Look on a good do it yourself website for instructions. It's pretty easy, just time consuming if you want to do a good job.

Preparation is key! Wash the walls with TSP. Use a primer if you're covering a darker color.
