Torrents are a tiny file you download that you open with a program (BitTorrent is just a program for this). When you open it with these free programs, it will download). It is made for downloading BIG files (movies, games, etc). It works by someone already having the file, and someone gets it from the torrent, and the next person, and the next person, then people can download from all the online people with the file at once, speeding it up. Programs usually have so if you leave it uploading to other people, you can usually have less limits in download speed on other files. Usually the files are illegal to download, but people download them anyway. Also, people use torrents if they ahve a movie, game, etc. that is damaged and need to get a new one without buying it (that is legal).

It's a P2P file-sharing network, the central site gives you a seed file contains a list of who's got this file for you to download from, the site doesn't really have it, BitTorrent has the same copyright and licensing issue as others like Napster before it: the technology is fine itself, but it's the files being passed around; those with a copyright to it.
