Today i saw a frantic squirrel carrying another squirrel (smaller, but not a baby) in his mouth, running accross the street. I think the squirrel being carried was dead. This imagine has been haunting me all day - what was going on? They are not carnivorous animals are they? Are they capable of killing another of their species? I'd love your serious thoughts on this.

Baby squirrels can get pretty darn big before they leave Mama. Some birds actually get bigger than their parents before they leave. They slim down later when they do more flying.

I've seen this happen too, and the squink was a younger squirrel being carried off by its mommy (the smaller one was alive). Squirrels are not carnivorous in that they kill things to eat them, but a lot of urban squirrels are scavengers and will eat just about anything, from leftover chicken to candy bars.

Yes, squirrels are opportunistic eaters, and have been known to be carnivorous (baby birds and worms, for example). Cannibalistic would be even more unusual, but not impossible.
