Wow, you've got a variety of answers here. Let's see if I can explain this better.

How about we look at the 5/8 - 5 /12 part first. The number on the bottom (the denominator) needs to be the same in order for you to do the subtraction. One way to guarantee this, is to multiply the left faction by the denominator of the right. Then multiply the right fraction by the denominator on the left.

So let's look at the 5/8. The denominator of the right is 12. Multiplying both the top and bottom of 5/8 by 12 gives you 60/96.

Now let's look at the 5/12. The denominator on the left is 8. Multiplying both the top and bottom of 5/12 by 8 gives you 40/96.

Ok, so now we've got 60/96 - 40/96. Because the bottom numbers (denominator) are the same, you can do the subtraction. It becomes (60-40)/96, which is the same as 20/96.

So we've solved the first part! 5/8 - 5/12 = 20/96.

Now we can look at the rest of your question. The full question was 5/8 - 5/12 + 1/6. We can replace the subtraction with our newly calculated answer to turn the question into
20/96 + 1/6

Now, once again we want the denominators to be the same. Let's multiply both the top and bottom of 1/6 by 16. That gives us 16/96.

So now our equation is 20/96 + 16/96, or (20+16)/96. That's equal to 36/96. And that answer would suffice, but it's better if we simplify it as much as possible.

To simplify, we could start by dividing both the top and bottom by 3. That gives us 12/32.

Next, we could divide by the top and bottom by 4 to give us 3/8.

I hope that helps

Plenty of explanations and answers. Key point is to make the denominators same by suitably multiplying in the numerator & denomitors for all the fractions; then add/subtract in the numerator. Simplify the fraction thus obtained.
5/8-5/12+1/6 => 30/48-20/48+8/48=>18/48 .
simplifying 18/48=>9/24=>3/8 is the answer.

The term here is LCD (Least Common Denominator) and you can usually get it from multiplying the 2 lowest denominators (the numbers on the bottom of the fraction) together. In this case, you would get 48, but 24 would do, too, since 6, 8, and 12 all go into 24. As above, convert all denominators to the LCD and multiply the numerators to match. Then perform the arithmetics.

you need to get the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of the franctions because they have different denominators. in that case, the LCD is 24. divide 24 with the corresponding denominator in each fraction then mulitply it with the corresponding numerator. take 24 as the new denominator in all the fractions.

for 5/8, we have 15/24. for 5/12, we have 10/24 and for 1/6, we have 4/24.

solve the equation:
(15 - 10 + 4) / 24

the answer is: 9/24, and simplifying: 3/8, final answer.

To answer this question, first, you must get the LCD. Then, divide the LCD to the original denominator and multiply it to the numerator to get the numerator of the LCD.
=5/8-5/12+1/6
=15/24-10/24+4/24
=9/24

To answer this question look at the denominators.... that are 8 , 12 and 6. now we have to make them to a Least Common Denominator ... we do that so that we do not have to deal with large numbers. we find this LCD by multiplying the numbers[denominators] to give a common number ... in this case we have 24 ... now we have to multiply the numerator to the number we multiplied with the denominator to produce the LCD . for this situation take 1/6 ... 6 times 4 = 24 therfore, we must multiply 1 the numerator, by 4 ... do the same for the rest and you would get your answer

= 5/8 - 5/12 + 1/6
lcm is 72
= 45/72-30/72+12/72
= 27/72
= 3/8
