in my opinion it is a self portrait of leonardo himself. if you ever get the chance to see the painting in person you can see why peopel adore it: because behind that smile and face there is a mystery. if you alook at art books and pics of da vinci and then at teh mona lisa, a mot of the features form the facial features as well as the expressions are a mirror image of da vinci.
