Have people become so cynical that it's presumed every non-business encounter between a man and a woman has to end up sexual? Whatever happened to just good friendly conversations or am I naive?

It will be very difficult to have a plutonic relationship at all, since you guys would have to be at Pluto, which is not a planet anymore by the way... But a platonic relationship is very possible...

Sure its possible. I do think, though, that in that situation the friend has to understand that because her platonic friend is married there may have to be some boundaries with regard to the type and amount of time she spends with the guy. In other words, such platonic friends should not do something like go away for the weekend to the mountains the way the guy might with his male buddies.

Platonic friends - yes. Relationship exactly the same as friendship with buddies of the same sex - not quite, add a few reasonable and thoughtful (and wise) boundaries to eliminate potential difficulties of one sort or another.

Yes, I think it's possible. (No offense, but it's spelled platonic, by the way.) Although, there probably should be a certain limit on the time they spend together if the man's married. He should give some consideration to how his wife feels about it. (But if she trusts him, and for good reason, then sure, why not.)
I hate it when people have to assume the worst every time a man and a woman socialize in a non-business way; it's really none of their business. And it just reinforces the idea that nobody has any self-control nor honor.

The word is Platonic BUT No, contrary to what the first answerer had to say, I do not believe you are naive. I have been happily married to one man for almost 33 years and yet I have enjoyed a totally platonic relationship with another man who is also married. I also have a friendship with this man's wife which is separate from my friendship with him. My husband works in the post office and he has friendships with several women who work there and who in turn are also married. Thanks for asking.

You asked for general perceptions, not my own personal opinion, and I'd have to say that, yes, there is a common cynical viewpoint about such relationships.
To counter such attitudes, I suggest encounters be open & beyond reproach - no candle lit tet-a-tets. Perhaps the wife should know and understand about your friendship; including her being included occasionally in a nominal but friendly way (unless the topics of conversation include her which is a red flag).
I've had my own experiences and know that it is a sensitive subject.

Largely yes people have become that cynical. However do whatever suits you. Try to be friends with his wife as well and tell her what you guys do and talk about, so she does not feel you are hiding anything. I have a few platonic female friends and I really like their company and conversation. My wife knows all this and sometimes accompanies me to see them.

Your being naive. Because there is a thing called emotional cheating. You should look it up on the internet and you'll find a long list of what it explains. There doesn't have to be sexual but it's still cheating. Although through emotional affairs it leads to sex.

Gelato Crazy must be a simpleton if she says the average woman would allow her husband to go away for a camping or fishing trip with his platonic female friend buddy style. Who is she trying to kid?

Society, along with television and movies has made it seem that way. Just about every movie and television show you see has the married man going out with the single lady. Every opportunity he has with her ends up with something sexual happening.
