I've suffered from cold sores all my life. I'm sorry to tell you...you're screwed for about 2 weeks. I've tried everything on the market. Abreeva is supposed to be the best, but I think its just overpriced hype. It may help a little, but only if you have it before and use at the first sign of the "tingle". If you already have a cold sore, it doesn't do much good, maybe speeds it up by a day or two. But really, I've used Abreeva, at the first sign, after the breakout, or none of it at all and I really don't see a noticable difference.

Valtrex is the only thing I've ever used to actually work. It does require a prescription and must be used at the first sign of "tingle" to be effective. Usually, by the time you realize you have one coming on, its too late to make an appointment with the doctor and get the drug. I have gotten Valtrex before with refills. GET THE REFILL! Have it on hand! Even if you have to keep it on hand for months before your next one, its worth it! You'll be thanking me later! Take it at the first sign of outbreak, the first feeling of the "tingle", if you've ever had cold sores, you know what I mean. Take it IMMEDIATELY and the swelling will go away in a day or two before it even fully breaks out. Its the only way! Trust me....been dealing with them for 20+ years...... *sigh*

campho phoenique is a third the price of abreva, but works a little slower. still, it works faster than not having meds. it's tempting to touch it, too. don't. leave it alone, and with some sort of meds, and you should be over it by the end of the week
