if it has a/c, first check to see if the drain tube is plugged up, you will have moisture build up off the evaporator core, and it has to have a place to drain, and if you do not have a/c, more then likely the heater core is leaking. you should however be able to smell antifreeze inside the passenger compartment, if the heater core is leaking and it will leave a greasy film on the windshield

The most likely cause is a leaking heater core or line in or out of that area . . . like the other responses have said . . . however one thing they have not said is that you need to be careful. If there is coolant in the mix that is causing the steam in the car, it is a poisonous gas for you to be breathing. You need to have it checked by a qualified mechanic as soon as you can. Until then, you should at least drive with the windows down. Make sure you pull over and get out of the car if you get a headache, feel nauseaus, or sleepy.

If it smells like the fluid in the radiator, then you have a heater core leaking.
You can throw a bit of cheap perfume in the radiator and see if the smell comes out your vents. If it does, then the core is definitely leaking.
If that isn't the problem, then you can run your A/C to dry the air out on the inside of the car. On newer models, defrost position turns the air on.
If no air, drive with the windows cracked open.

You have a hole in the heater core. When you turn on the air water is still flowing into the heater core. When you do a small hole in the core will mist up the insider on the inside of the winshild.

sounds like you have a hole in your heater coil...that sucks...don't run your defrost and it wont hurt...but it will have to be addressed sooner or later...if you don't need heat, just take your in line and your out line to the core and hook them together with a coupler...its cheap and effective...it takes about ten minutes and anyone could do it..
