Aluminum bats are not allowed in major league baseball for a big reason... They are far too dangerous for big leaguers to use. They slingshot the ball so fast and so hard compared to metal, hitting a ball on the sweet spot of a metal bat (which is far greater in surface area) as opposed to a wood bat will send a baseball about 50 feet further on a line drive. fly balls can go even further because of wind and arc .. etc. If major leaguers were to use metal bats, they risk killing the pitcher with a comebacker to the mound. The ball comes off aluminum bats far to hard and fast to risk hurting players worth so much money.
Now to answer the question fully, Thin walled aluminum bats with compressed gas hit the ball the farthest. I believe the newest strongest bats are made with compressed nitrogen or hydrogen. They also are more effective and are higher priced because they will last a hell of a lot longer than wood.
although i am a ballplayer and love to hit with wood a lot more than metal simply because wood is the best, i wish wood was better for hitting the long ball. As for the people that claim wood hits the ball farther, Tell that to college coaches. and than ask why they only train with wood and then when game time comes, they use metal.

Surprisingly, a wood bat hits the ball further than an aluminum one...if hit perfectly. A wood bat is solid, through & through...aluminum bats are hollow inside.
If you put both bats in a big league player's hands...the ball will go farther with wood, but it will travel faster with aluminum.
But there is no one bat that hits a ball further than another...it's the person using the bat that makes the ball go far...if the person swinging the bat is not good, it won't matter what kind of bat he/she is using.

Any bat held in the hands of Ted Williams, or any bat held by a steroid monster like Barry Bonds.
Ted Williams studied the science of batting. That is why he became the greatest batter in the history of baseball, so far.

The bat with the best batter, Mark McGuiere! Seriously....an aluminum bat is by far the best if you can hit the sweet spot. Heavier, the better IF you can get a good spped and an excellent wrist snap.

wood bats hit the ball further than aluminum, aluminum bats only have a bigger sweet spot than wooden bats do , but if u hit the sweet spot of a wood bat than it will go further than an aluminum bat. The best brand of wood bats is Sam Bats made in Canada, (bonds and pujols use them)
