My friend who runs a company in this industry taught himself computer programming, and studied it for a couple of years in college. He then got degrees in ancient history and philosophy. He began in the industry as a programmer, and impressed the writers with his input until he became a writer and then an entrepreneur.

I've linked to that part of his company's website that talks about working conditions at his company. I think this will answer some of your questions. One or two of the folks working at this company also have links to personal webpages that may have e-mail addresses on them. They might be responsive to very specific questions about what employers are looking for in their specific job titles. It seems several of these folks were interns who impressed their bosses and were later hired full-time.

Get the best education in computer 3d animation, get an internship in a cutting edge company using the most advanced software and hardware. don't expect a job right out of school. There are many thousands of kids with these degrees and only room for a few very gifted, dedicated and brilliant people. Work as a janitor at the company you want to work for if you have to in order to get a foot in the door. imagination, dedication and agressive persistance will make or break you. and a perfect 4.0 from a top rated institution won't hurt either. The end all, of course, is raw genetic talent.

I don't know if you'll be able to find a job with game design (sooo many people are doing it right now), but you can easily get a drafting job at an architecture firm. If you know how to make 3d computer renders, you can get paid quite well to start (even at a small firm).
