The Earth acts like a magnet itself. Magnets have poles. If you try to put the poles of two magnets together they will either attract, or repel. The same goes for a compass. The needle is a magnet and the pole wants to attract to the north magnetic pole of the Earth. The Earth is not literally as magnetic as a magnet, but there is a slight magnetic effect. The atoms of the Earth tend to want to align together magnetically, so all the magnetic material in the Earth is lined up toward the north pole, just like your compass. I'm not sure about how the magnetism works, but that's the basic concept.

The spinning of the earth/moon system about an axis makes it impossible for magnetic dipoles in the earth's core to line up in an East or West orientation. How the dipoles became magnetized, or why North is North have not been explained to my satisfaction. The magnetic field of the sun likely has a great deal to do with this.

The Earth's magnetic pole in the north is actual a "south pole". the proper of the needle which factors North is called North, so by using the regulations of attraction, the position that's pointing must be a South pole.

actually...The directional north, is a magnetic south, and the directional south, is a magnetic north, cause the north point of a compass points north...which means opposites...repell no, they just don't tell people that. every hundred million years the magnitism of the earth flips upsidown.
Its not that only one part attracts, it's that the north point of a compass is the part, made to point out. If you put the arrow on the other side of the pointy thingy, it'd still work, you'd just have to look at the other side.

THe Earth's magnetic field is positive North.
It's negative South.
THat causes the indicator to point North.

Well ya see here is how it works.....The world is aligned at a particular angle...and we have to have that magnetic field from the north for the simple fact that if we didn't the world would A. either never spin or B. be a crooked place where we all have to walk on one leg. But anyway man I really don't know but i thought it would be fun to act stupid for a minute...lol

The Earths core is made of molten iron. Iron is a very good conductor of electricity and electric currents can flow easily. As the Earth's core rotates, large electric currents are built up and these produce the Earth's magnetic field.

North and South are magnetic. The magnetosphere envelopes all iron core planets. The core of our planet is a giant fluid magnet which creates the electromagnetic field around our planet.
