Pregnancy Books -
Your Pregnancy Week By Week (I think the author is Curtis)
The Pregnancy Book by Dr. Sears

Birth Books -
The Birth Book by Dr. Sears
The Birth Partner by Simkin
Birthing From Within by England
Husband Coached Childbirth by Dr. Bradley

Breastfeeding Books -
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by La Leche League
So THAT'S What They're For by Tamaro

Two good breastfeeding websites -
http://www.lalecheleague.org
http://www.kellymom.com

Child Development -
Your Baby & Young Child Birth to Age 5 by the AAP
The Baby Book by Dr. Sears

Parenting -
Adventures in Gentle Discipline by Hilary Flower
The Discipline Book by Dr. Sears
(There are some other really good ones, but those are the best parenting books for YOUNG babies and toddlers.)

The "What to Expect" books and the "Girlfriend's Guide" books all STINK! I hated them! They contain bad breastfeeding information, assume everyone weans at one year and assume all moms use pain meds in labor. There are MUCH better books out there.

I have to agree, the "What to expect" books contain inaccurate info, and are not very useful. The pregnancy ones in particular are horrible. Inaccurate and scary info, and not enough positive qualities to recommend to anybody.

Another one to avoid AT ANY COST is "On Becoming Babywise" by Gary Ezzo

This book has caused babies to end up in the hospital with failure to thrive, and the American Academy of Pediatrics even warns against this book! Ezzo, the author, is not a doctor, and has zero training in child development. He's just a whacko guy with dangerous harmful ideas about babies and children. Any idiot can write a book, unfortunately. http://www.ezzo.info for more reasons why this book is BAD news!

I recommend anything by Dr. Sears. He's a pediatrician, and a father of 7. His wife also co-authored his books, so she contributes a mother's perspective.

If you want a good book on getting your baby to sleep, I suggest "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley

I also like Mothering magazine. It is not just 100 pages of formula advertisements, it has great articles that make you think. http://www.mothering.com

I checked out a million books from the library, and then I had to go buy my own copies of two of them - What to Expect When You're Expecting and What To Expect The First Year.

Those books were life-savers when I had a question at 3 am, or when there was a strange ache or cramp. Or when I just wondered what the average age for a first tooth was. I would recommend those two to everyone.

Superbaby food (how to make your own baby food and other baby items)

What to expect when you're expecting is OK but make sure you get the most up to date book. Last one I saw was way outdated and has some misinformation in it. (this would be true for any book, make sure to check when it was published)

For a newly pregnant mom, "The Thinking Womans Guide to a Better Birth" http://www.amazon.com/-Thinking-Womans-Guide-/dp/0399525173/sr=8-1/qid=1156944603/ref=sr_1_1/104-3912477-9711169?ie=UTF8

About taking care of the baby through the first 2 years, Dr. Seears;"The Baby Book"- I liked this much better than What to Expect...http://www.amazon.com/-Baby-Book-Everything/dp/0316778001/sr=1-1/qid=1156944711/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3912477-9711169?ie=UTF8&s=books

For a mom who might be nervous about birth- "Spiritual Midwifery".http://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Midwifery/dp/1570671044/sr=1-1/qid=1156944872/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3912477-9711169?ie=UTF8&s=books It was written in the 70's, and is a bit "psychadelic" but full of great birth stories that are positive (to counteract all the horror stories she will hear!)

I also like to get new moms a subscription to Mothering Magazine. It is a less mainstream magazine than you get at the grocery store, more about natural family living and really a great magazine- www.mothering.com

Oh, and a MUST have is a great breastfeeding book. "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" http://www.amazon.com/-Womanly-Art-/dp/0452285801/sr=1-1/qid=1156945015/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3912477-9711169?ie=UTF8&s=books or The Ultimate Guide to Breastfeeding: http://www.amazon.com/-Ultimate-Breastfeeding/dp/0761529969/sr=1-5/qid=1156945048/ref=sr_1_5/104-3912477-9711169?ie=UTF8&s=books or even a membership to La Leche League, then they get a subscription to their regular magazine. www.lalecheleague.org

what to expect when you're expecting,
a book called "good parenting"...i would tell you the authors names but i don't want to get in my daughter's room this late and wake her up! you can do a search on amazon to find it. really great- gives good advice for newborns and toddlers, all the way into the teenage years! i read it cover to cover before i had my daughter and still refer to it (even though my daughter is six months old and not much applies to her right now!) it's nice to have as a future reference, and to have all those solutions in your head before the behaviors start! if you would like the author's names just to research the book, you can contact me and i will look and get back to you!

If currently pregnant...."What to expect when you're expecting", and if you have a newborn..."What to expect the first year". Hands down the best two books out there. Sorry I don't remember the author. I have passed those books on to my nephew for his little expectation!! Good luck.....
