I don't want to work with super or hi 8 or Beta because I want to be able to do editing at home. What is a good digital camera i.e. what do film students, etc use for a cheap decent quality camera?

I don't know about film students but I'm very happy with the results I get from my Panasonic PV-GS300. Its in the $500-600 range so its not all that expensive.

Sony has awesome digital/video cameras. Mine's a Sony 1140. I have a wide angle lens to make it easier to film skydives. Push button screen, night vision..... I do all my editing at home using a nifty program called Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Also, DVD Architecht.

You can really just get any cam that runs off mini DV tapes.
Those are usually from $200-$500. Not TOO bad.
