The thousand words is not to be taken at face value, but transformed into a symbolistic quantity of meaning. You have to think: what are a thousands words? It is a message that can convey a lot. And a picture, in this case, is a message that is short and to the point, yet it has a lot of meaning in it. The picture has so much meaning in it. And 1000 words have a lot of meaning. Just one of those expressions.

It's meant to be taken figuratively, not literally. Which is easier for most people to comprehend: a picture or a wordy description of the picture? Most people would choose the picture. That's because they may be more visual, meaning they need to see something in action or a diagram or whatever before they understand it, whereas someone else can take off with a simple description and they don't need any picture. The latter group is in the minority, hence why the phrase is so popular, if not where it originated.

It all depends on what the words are saying.
A thousand words of love could be someones life, or a thousand words of hate could mean war.
A thousand words are based on the heart of the person that's saying them and on the person that is hearing them.
It could be all that you have stated, picture to the blind, essay to the teacher, story to the child being tucked in at night or a book that can be read from cover to cover in a day/night.

when they said a picture i think they meant a good picture...
a thousand should paint a forest full of life in the minds eye...
i saw a picture of an old house once it was taken from the upstairs bathroom window...the drama unfolded sure enough in the yard but the picture was the patterns of long past wallpapers peeling ...a sink with mismatched handles...a drip caught in mid drop...the light fixture from the 19th century...the colored panes at the top of the window...countless pictures...countless words...
it should at least be a picture...it has everything to do with what the words say!!!

A thousand is the number of words it would take in "describing" a picture.
A thousand is the number of words that are unnecessary to speak when you are "shown" that picture.

Well we all know the quote talk is cheap and being that talk is merely spoken words I guess 1000 words is a bargain.
