You know, it's funny, I asked my mom something like that when I was little. She said that she couldn't tell because her granny was sick and it was dark in the house because all the drapes were closed because the granny couldn't get out of bed. I bought it.

Good question. Then again, most fairy tales as we know them today are rather child-friendly watered-down versions. When they were originally written, they were akin to horror novels and meant to scare kids, not entertain them.
