What's funny is that they are both owned by the same company, "Darden Restaurants." Employees from either restaurant (and Bahama Breeze, Smokey Bones and 52 Seasons), can get a dine-in discount or transfer to other Darden Restaurants. It's just one big "happy" Darden family.

Neither restaurant tries to be "classy". It's not Darden's goal. And to answer your question, each location is different. The service might be better at your local Red Lobster than at mine, and my Olive Garden's food might be more carefully prepared. You might even enter one restaurant well-known for great service and food, and just catch a server on an off-moment. Red Lobster has their fresh fish and Live Maine Lobsters (to counterpoint what someone said about nothing fresh at the Communist Crustacean). Olive Garden has their endless soup and salad. Red Lobster has those Cheddar Bay Biscuits and excellent clam chowder...

It all depends on what you want. Neither one tries to be classy. It's not their goal. If you want classy, go spend the extra $100 per check to have table linens, small portions, and all the guests in formal wear.

Both of them are cheap eats, neither is really classy, but of the two, Olive Garden I guess for the food and service. Red Lobster doesn't serve much that's freshly caught, so far as I know. Most everything was frozen in brine and re-cooked, or soaked in butter-ish oil/salt to add flavor. A good restaurant doesn't have to rely on flavor tricks because they choose good food to start with and simply enhance the flavors.

I haven't been to Olive Garden. I don't like Red Lobster. It's not very classy! The Food at Red Lobster was not what I expected it to be, service was terrible, and the price was way too pricey!

Olive Garden by far, at least the one I frequent. The food is great, the service is wonderful and the people who work there treat you a lot better than the Red Lobster we eat at. When you go there, if you aren't wearing designer clothing they seem to look down their snoot at you. Definitely go to Olive Garden. Making me hungry for Italian now and it's after midnight!
