a. (x-1)(x-1)=0
(x-1)^2 = 0

you have to think of the number whose product would equal the third term and the sum is equal to the sum of the 2nd term. in this case the possible factor of 1 is
1. -1 and -1
2. 1 and 1
we chose the first because the sum of it will be -2 which is the second term of the equation

therefore x = 1

b. quadratic formula

x = [-b+- sqrrt (b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

substitute

x = -(-2) +- sqrrt((-2)^2 - 4(1)(1))] / 2(1)
x = [2 +- sqrrt 0 ] / 2
x = 2/2
x = 1

hope this help :)

x^2-2x+1=0
(x-1)^2=0
x-1=0
x=1

or just plug a, b, and c into the quadratic formula. a=1, b=-2, c=1

2006-08-30 02:47:16 · answer #4 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

By Factorization,

x^2 - 2x + 1 = 0

(x -1)(x - 1) = 0

(x - 1)^2 = 0

x = 1

By Quadratic Equation,

x = [-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

a = 1
b = -2
c = 1

x = [-(-2) +/- sqrt((-2)^2 - 4(1)(1))]/(2(1))

x = [2 +/- sqrt(4 - 4)]/2

x = [2 +/- sqrt(0)]/2

x = 2/2

x = 1

A. x^2 - 2x + 1 = 0
(x-1)(x-1)=0
This is true only when x=1

B. x= [-b (+/-)SqRt b^2 - 4ac]/ 2a
a=1
b=-2
c=1
So x= [2(+/-)SqRt (-2)^2 -4(1)(1)]/2(1)

x= 2+Sqrt 0]/2 or [2-Sqrt 0]/2 which both equal 1
