Nothing. If it was legal, they'd all be tested for STD's, and they'd all use condoms. It should be legal. (I'm female.)

What do you know of rapists? I have heard a whole speech on that garbage idea that rape goes down when prostitution is legal. Study up a bit on the reasons rapists rape. It usually has far less to do with gaining sexual gratification and more about causing hurt to the woman involved. Why do you think grandmothers get raped? It's not cuz they're hot and guys just want their bodies so badly. Think about it. Do some serious research before you make those wild claims about legalizing prostitution.
For another thing, do you know how many people have STDs? Also, do you know how many STDs cannot be prevented by the use of a condom? And how many STDs are incurable? They are nothing to be trifled with.
In my opinion, prostitution is for desperate people who can't get their own relationship and think they can buy one for a few hours. That's pretty lame and stupid. I don't think someone can be much of a man if they can't woo their own woman without throwing money in her face.

Condoms do not always work.Diseases are spread and guess what sometimes hookers get pregnant and then those poor kids dont even know who their dad is.Also I know a real rapist and you are so wrong about rape. Most rapists rape for power and control .Rapist dont want to pay for sex they want to take it while causing pain and fear.Prostitutes male and female get raped and killed by these sexual predators all the time. Why not make it legal? We dont need to put a stamp on this dangerous business and say this is ok .My concern is kids will start thinking this is a good way to make a buck and put themselves at risk to disease and predators. Also I would hate for my son or daughter to go around with the stigma of being a prostitute. What kind of happy fulfilling relationships can prostitutes have?I feel so sorry for all the precious young people and even some older people who have to live this life. I hope they can get out. I dont know where your getting your info from but your just plain wrong about the rape levels going down.People are not peices of meat! Sex is part of your soul, You dont sell your self.Real weirdos frequent prostitutes ,its a dangerous way of life.

Most prostitutes are not just women who have chosen to make a few bucks... they are abused, homeless, and drug addicted, or they have been trafficked from another country and are effectively sex slaves. It is not usually a matter of free choice, which is what's wrong with prostitution.
However, when there is some level of legalization, it becomes possible to protect the women from violence, detect forced prostitution, and monitor the spread of diseases. (Prostitutes in Europe have to be regularly tested by a doctor, which can't be said of the US, so legalization actually REDUCES the spread of STDs.) Legalization means control.
It's a sad situation, but the only thing sadder is not knowing anything about what happens to these women and not having many tools to protect them. It's wrong for the women who are victims to be afraid of going to jail themselves.

Nothing. Oh- the cops would have to find more difficult crimes to solve; the lawyers would have fewer clients to make money off of; there might not be as many people catching AIDS -needing to get the treatment that keeps the drug companies in business; pimps might be forced to go out & WORK for a living; And the moralists, politicions, and sexually insecure among us- would lose a big issue to warn us all about in their quest to win us over to their way of thinking. Other than making this world a less hipocritical place, and putting a few people out of work- I can't see what's wrong with legalizing prostitution either!

If legislated by the government, the way any trade is, there would be a good income on the taxes. We could fund so many public programs on the federal and state taxes on prostitution.
....of course in the current political market I would be more worried about all the tax money going to fund war.
However the rape rate wouldn't go down so far. The majority of rapes are motivated not by sex but by power. It's a crime of domination. And there are several forms of rape which each have their own worlds of motivation and effect.

I haven't read all of the responses so I am sure that I am not in the majority. But I don't have a problem with the legalization of prostitution or marijuana.
People are not going to stop doing either one, so we might as well come up with a way to regulate both, tax both and move the f#@k on!

It IS legal in some countries and regulated - the prostitutes have to go through tests, etc. So yea... rape and diseases are extremely rare in those areas.
But however, the US is based on Christianity (or least, they try to shove it down your throat even if the politicians don't actually practice it - the money "In God We Trust", the pledge of allegiance "One Nation Under God", etc.)
So it is because of the "Christian crap", as you so eloquently put it, that the US has yet to legalize prostitution.
Same thing goes for hemp - would be a great crop for our soil, produce oil, paper, clothing, etc. Many more positives for it than cutting down our trees, depleting forests and the soil, or these wars and high gas prices, etc. And despite the fact the type of hemp used in those cases have less than 1% THC (the stuff that gets you "high" therefore making it useless to stoners) - good luck getting that legalized, either.
Although... on the hemp issue, it's more of a billionaires wanting to stay billionaires issue than a Christian issue.

I think you shouldn't even think about the "Christian Crap" if it's getting in the way of you making a moral judgement. If people didn't have Christian (or jewish or hindu or muslim) codes, they would still probably have some kind of moral code and decide this isn't necessarily ideal. It is definitely increasing the chance of disease.. Sex is also about some kind of connection other than just physical, so how fulfilling is it for some woman to be yawning and going "oh. oh. yeah. baby. do me. uh huh. yeah right." Basically she's completely lying about enjoying it. It sounds like it would be fun and serve a need, but read up on it, because in practice its basically completely dishonest and fake affection/fake enjoyment for the woman. What good is that? If this appeals to you, yeah then this is pretty similar to rape. You could screw a blow-up doll, or f*ck a tree for that matter, if you don't give 2 sh*ts at all about the person you're with and whether they are enjoying it or not.

I doubt your claims about rape going to zero. You would have to back that up with credible statistics that likely do not exist.
Many Nevada counties have legal prostitution. Condoms are required. The women are checked periodically. Anal sex, because of the increased risk of AIDs, is not permitted. You can use your credit card. The people of Nevada deal with it.

Your assumption that making prostitution legal decreases the "rape rate" is false. Do you have anything to back it up? I looked up statistics for Nevada compared to my home state (per person) and the "rape rate" is higher in Nevada where prostitution is legal!
Reasons not to legalize prostitution: objectification of women causing an increase in violence against women
degradation of morals and societal norms
