The Y axis is the vertical one while the horizontal one is the X axis. The point where these two intersect on your graph is the point of Origin (usually marked as 0). To its right we have the positive X values while to the left are the negative values.
Similarly, to the top of the intersection are the positive values of Y while the negtive values of Y are below the intersection point.

Y Is Vertical

Just remember...the y is a V without the tail...as in Vertical
