The bottles are clean when I drop her off and have a gritty dirt looking substance that looks kind of like tea. They do not go outside with infants and there is no dirt in the room. Please Help! I don't want to accuse them of anything but I am concerned here. My baby is 5 months old and is still taking breast milk via bottles at daycare.

I would bluntly point it out.

You don't need to accuse but ask what is this?

Look at it like this: You have only one 5 month old infant, if they can't tell you why (you are giving them breast milk) - remove your child IMMEDIATELY.

Breast milk doesn't get "dark". It's a frightening scenario in my book.

Sometimes when I run my things through the dishwasher I have to go back over the bottles, especially if my son didn't rinse everything well before he loaded it for me (rarely!)...anyway theres a gritty type substance left over in the bottom of some of the bottles. Is this a well known, clean, recommended, professional daycare; is it someones home?
Either way I'm puzzled too, so I hope when you find out you come back and let us know!
NEVER be afraid to ask , intimidated etc.. when it concerns your child.

voice your concern to the manager. this is YOUR child and you are paying for her to be cared for in what you think is a safe, healthy environment....

breastmilk does not change color and it's not gritty. it could be that they are rinsing the bottles out with water after they feed your daugher and the water contains minerals and dirt particles that end up in the bottom of the bottle after rinsing it. if this is the case, you could try switching her to disposable bottles. playtex makes them and they come with plastic liners that you just drip into the bottle so that they can be thrown away after use-i used these with all 3 of my girls and they were breastfed and went to daycare too. i never had to worry about stuff being left in the bottle b/c the liner got thrown out.

if you decide to talk to the manager instead and you feel they aren't concerned enough to resolve the problem-remove your daughter from their facility and make a report with the state. your children are your life and whoever watches them should treat them as if it was their child....

i've attached the link for playtex if you wanted to look into the disposable bottle idea-they really do work great...

good luck to you

Is there a problem with the water at the daycare? Is someone adding karo syrup to the bottles without your knowledge? Is there a possiblility that the day care is using dark karo to make sugar water for your baby????????? I would ask questions and then change day cares, this is unacceptable. Have you tried disposable bottles to send to the day care if changing providers isn't an option?

Maybe they're running out of breast milk bottles, and doing extra formula feedings without your awareness. The gritty substance sounds a lot like unmixed formula. I would, without a doubt, ask right away. Don't let this one go. It's a safety issue, as well as a nutrition issue.

If the bottles come in contact in any way with water I would think maybe it is very hard water or impurities. You should call the local health department where you live and ask them if they can do an analysis. I would not let this go by, it may be a simple explanation but there are a lot of sick people in this world.

That sounds very strange. Do they rinse the bottles after they feed her? If so, it could be sediment in the water. I'd ask them. You can do it so it sounds like you're not accusing them. Ask them the next time you pick her up, "Hi Mary. I was wondering what this strange brown sediment is in the bottom of the bottle. I notice it in her bottles when I pick her up in the evenings, and I'm not sure what it is. We don't have this at home, so I was just curious!" (Make sure you smile afterwards so they don't think you're accusing them of anything fishy.)

i would ask them right out what it is. if they don't know anything about it, consider changing daycares if they do not want to help you find answers. a lot of weird people take liberties with people's children, thinking they know what is okay and what's not okay for them. i've known people that actually put chocolate syrup in their babies formula or let their 6 month old take sips of their mt. dew or eat ice cream. what the heck?! sounds like something's fishy, i would really try to check it out at the daycare if i were you.

Could it be turning a color from sitting there. Maybe the milk gets old & turns that color? But that wouldn't explain the gritty dirt substance. Are the washing them out? Maybe bad water? Not sure that would be. That would concern me too, I hope you find out what it is.:)

I would suspect that your daycare provider is leaving the bottle set out someplace warm and whatever milk is in the bottle is turning.

I would wonder if they are refrigerating the bottles at all. Is there any way that you can get them to at least rinse the bottles out after they use them?
