Do you think it's time that the world gave more power to the U.N. in order to set up some kind of human rights laws that Must be followed in every country despite the form of government in power?

I was just sitting around thinking about this. I haven't formed and solid opinions yet so I just wanted to know what you guys thought. It doesn't have to be a political point-of-view. Just from a humanitarian stand-point, what do you think?

Well that's one of the problems I came up with Frisbee. Ultimately, the country with the most power would dictate the U.N.'s agenda, thus any human rights laws formed would be a reflection of that country's morals. The U.S. has power now, but you can't count on that lasting forever. Unfortunately what goes up, must come down.

Sounds good, sounds right. But getting other countries, especially Muslim ones, to get onboard will be mighty tough.

Absolutely NOT, The [U]seless [N]ations wastes enough money and stabs us in the back enough already. The U.S. should pull out of the UN until they get their own house in order. The UN has abused what power they have time and time again. Util they are no longer a wholly corrupt body they should have no power whatsoever.

How would the UN enforce any human rights violations? By having the most heinous human rights violating countries chairing the committee like they already typically do? The UN is a sham. The UN is more concerned with the Guantanamo Muslim Country Club than genocide in half a dozen other countries. UN, BAH!

More power to the UN? That sounds like a good idea compared to what the UN is now. The UN now has no power at all, so more power could be a good thing. Historically, more power to world organizations has proven useful. For instance, the reason the League of Nations failed was because the US wasn't a part of the group and there wasn't much power for the League. The UN has more power, and so is a little more successful. But you never know.

There already exists enough Human Rights material in the international arena. Universal Declaration of Human Rights/UN charter/ ICCPR etc etc.. Apart from that there are numerous regional human rights documents and forums. What we require is not more Human Rights documents. We need a strong mechanism to enforce the already existing laws in the area. The effort should be in that direction. Of course I appreciate your concern !

It has been too late to react. At least now UN gas to intervene to put peace in some countries like Iraq, Lebanon.

Just for the profit of some people many are suffering. Your opinion is right. It's time that UN should be given more rights to establish peace.

But we have to see whether it works or not. Because in past also, before World war II, there something like UN failed to stop that war.

Most of all countries and terrorist groups have to recognize that peace is important for people than weapons.

Give the UN authority and power of a sovereign nation's laws, customs and constitutions? No way in Hell!

They are power mad as it is. Where were they in Rowanda? Ethiopia? South Africa? Human rights? What the UN knows about human rights would be able to fill a thimble with space left over for what they know about the American Constitutional rights we now enjoy! They would LOVE to take them away in the name of "Human Rights!"

If you had heard of Amnesty International, then you would not think to give more power to the u.n. but to them. They have made great strides in bringing civil and humane, justice and punishment, to most nations, even China.
