A come along uses a cog with a catch, the catch is always engaged for safety. there is a latch that will disengage the catch when brought to full tension. be sure that when doing this that you have a strong hand on the lever. It is only when you take the tension off, using the lever that you can release it approx. a half turn until there is no more tension on the cable.

Cable Come Along

You'd do better to have someone show you, or try the new video answers. You release the cable by pulling it half a notch and flipping the little lever that fits into the notches to keep it from slipping. There is another lever that switches which way the ratchet winds or unwinds, too.

I realize that isn't a good answer. Your Q is one of those Q where a picture (or video) would be worth 10,000 words.

RE:
How do you use a come along? How do you release the cable?

if you hold the arm down, to release the pressure on the ratchet, you will be able to disengage the little slide bar that catches on the cogs of the ratchet. after a few of these motions, the cable will be loose enough to unhook the come along.

it is best to wear gloves, because cables can cut like knives if you're not super careful.

How To Use A Come Along

Danny, if this is an indication of your experience with using a come along, you really need to find a friend who knows what they're doing, so you don't end up hurting yourself or dropping whatever your lifting.

Maybe your best bet is to try the web site of the manufacturer. I have one too and have had the same issues when trying to release it under tension. There is a release lever on it with an arrow indicating the direction of the spool but it seems every time I use it its a trial and error process. I do know that the release lever must be flipped before it releases.
