Potassium, a mineral, assists in muscle contraction and in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in body cells.
You need to take in more potassium, like from bananas and other fluids. Gatorade is supposed to help with the electrolyte balance. Other sources of potassium are:
turkey
cantelope
orange juice
milk
salmon
halibut
chicken

.If they wake you and you're in tears, I used to get the same thing, like your toes spread apart and the muscle in your calf twists???
For some reason, after I got into my twenties, they seemed to subside. Maybe a vitamin deficiency. Whenever it seems like my legs are going to start getting less severe cramps that now I get, I take vitamin E and within a day or two they stop.
Good Luck !!!

I just read other answers and disagree with the salt remedy. I was and still am a saltaholic. Back in the days that my cramps were severe enough to wake me in the night, I was actually licking salt out of my hand besides always smothering my food with it, so I find salt doing the trick hard to believe

I have kidney disease and suffer from cramps for most my life now, eat bannanas, lots, eat potatoes, drink gatorade. You see cramps occur when water(fluid) is passed into and out of the muscle tissue, stay hydrated. Oh, you can also use aspercreme, just rub into cramp in the middle of the night and you'll get quick relief. Good luck!

And too much potassium can lead irregular heart rythyms so watch it.

According to Dr. Gott (a newspaper columnist) put a bar of soap(not Dial or Dove) even just a small bar like from a hotel, under your sheets, where your lower extremities are. Quite a few people swear to it. I myself, never point my feet down when stretching, always flex your feet up, to prevent cramping. Plus make sure your getting enough potassium(eat a banana daily)Sweet and cramp free dreams....

I suffer from this and I was told by the doctor I didn't have enough salt in my diet. I know they say that salt is bad for you but if you don't have enough it can cause the cramps. Just try increasing the amount of salt in your food.

Also, until that happens, try sleeping with something heavy on your legs. I have a heavy winter dressing gown that I use when it gets really bad and I find it helps.

Good luck.

Increase your potassium intake. Eat a banana or take a Km supplement. Plus, drink more water during the day.

This is due to stoppage of blood circulation. This can also happen when we sit in a same posture for a long time. Just shake your legs to allow blood to flow down so that the numbness will go off.

I have had a lot of success with calcium-magnesium-zinc tablets taken 3 times daily with meals. Also eat more fruit to increase your potassium levels.
