B.C. means "before Christ" and A.D. stands for "Anno Domini", latin for In the Year of the Lord. So 50 BC means 50 years before AD 1 (there is no year 0) and AD 50 means 49 years after AD 1.

This method was worked out by a monk in the 6th century and it's not completely certain if he meant the year 1 to be the year Jesus was born or died. Other's place these events in different years anyway. It's just the system we've used for 1500 years.

Some commonly used periods are:
Paleololithic - from 2,000,000 BC
Mesolithic - from 10,000 BC
Neolithic (agriculture) - varies but eg. from 5500 BC in Europe
Bronze Age - from 3300 BC in Near East, 1200BC in SE Europe
Iron Age - from 1200 BC in Near East, 800BC in Europe
Hellenistic - from ~400 BC in southeast Europe
Roman - from ~100 BC in Europe
Early Medieval - from ~AD 400 in Europe
Medieval - from ~AD 800 in Europe
Post Medieval - from ~AD 1500 in Europe
Industrial/Modern - from ~AD 1800

Well the AD and BC are abbreviations of Lattin. I can only remember the Anno Domini which means "in the year of the lord" THis goes around the after the traditionally reconogized year of the birth of Jesus of Nazereth. BC is the years before he was borm. Some people use CE and BCE .... Common Era - Less refered to as the Christian Era and Before the Common Erra.

A.D. means Anno Domini - Year of our Lord. The original dates for the years comes from the Christian faith. Now, the years are referred to CE - Common Era, for secular people. AD 1 represents the birth of Jesus Christ.

BC - Before Christ, now Before Common Era.

So, 1000 AD is 1,006 years ago and 1000BC is 3,006 years ago.

Bear in mind that the Muslim faith uses a calendar based on Muhammed's life.
