I have always wanted to live in California since I was a little girl. My husband said we could consider it, but we need to research it first. Where is somewhere nice and not to expensive and resonable distance from the ocean. I have always thought that LA would be so fun or Venice Beach. I don't know the area and know that those are expencive places, but what is nice that is close. What are we talking about for prices and cost of living?

There are not many cheap places to live in California. I live in the Sacramento area. It has all the amenities of a large city but you can be out in the country in 40 minutes or less. We are in the delta area, lots of water and two rivers, just 1 hour from mountains and 1 1/2 hour from the ocean. Lots of history in this area and many small town to explore and visit. Near here is Sutters Mill where the gold rush began and is also Mark Twain country. We're only 2 1/2 hours from Lake Tahoe and Reno Nevada. The weather here is pretty good. Just decide what lifestyle you like and start checking things out.

Hi,
You can go along the San Diego area, it has increased in cost but not as expensive as the Los Angeles area. You can look at Torrance California. You can also look at Hollister in California, it is a smaller town atmosphere, but about 35 minutes from Monterey, CA. You can go into the valley more and drive to the beach, in general less than 1 hour is a great option. Go to Yahoo! Maps and enter the city that you may be interested in and then identify the closest beach, map it for time and distance.

There is nothing like California, rain that is not anything like the mid and east coast. The weather is generally nice, of course it does have it rainy season.

Love California!

I would go to San Diego, not L.A. Just left there actually, we weren't making it and my hubby and I both grew up there.
If you go to San Diego I would suggest moving to La Mesa or Alpine, although if you don't mind being close to the Mexico border I think that there are still pretty good prices on houses in Chula Vista. My hubby is a Home Mortgage Consultant, and was one in San Diego too, so if you want to get a better idea of prices for different areas just e-mail me and I will ask him about any of the questions you have.
North County is nice, but the prices are a bit higher. I personally don't care for Temecula. El Cajon is another area to consider if you plan on purchasing a home. To be honest El Cajon isn't the nicest place in San Diego to live, but as far as I know the city is offering to help people with a down payment if they purchase there...they are trying to revitalize the area and make it a nicer place to live.

Try Temecula. It is about 45 minutes from the beaches of San Diego (Encinitas, Carlsbad, DelMar, etc...). It's about 30 minutes from the mountains for snow in the winter. Depending on traffic, it's about an hour or an hour and a half from Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. It's a really nice community, and you can still buy a nice size home for about $500,000.00. Check it out on www.homeseekers.com.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I just moved from there becuase it was way to expensive. There is nothing in California that is not expensive. The median home price is about 630,000. I lived in Orange County which is close to the beach, and the homes there are in the millions, if not more. Even apartments are expensive. We were in a 2 bedroom apartment with about 1100 sq feet for 2300/mo. Unless you have a lot of money and want to deal with fake people, I'd move somewhere else.

Yeah, come to California and buy a nice home at a low price. Live close to the beach, get a convertible and go to concerts. Great paying jobs are everywhere. Do not worry about paying for anything because Disneyland is next door.

Ask a Mexican, they can tell you all the good places to live for next to nothing, beach, mountains, Lake Tahoe, you name it. They seem to have a system for making a living too. Have figured out free medical care (paid for), housing (paid for) monthly income, food stamps and the like. Then there's the workers (us) that will tell you, it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here.
