A heart I need for a son, a soul I need for a son, compassion I want from my son, righteousness, mercy, strength to suffer and carry pain, that I want from my son, not a mind without a soul!"

Health care training nourishes the intellect, but ignores the heart. Health care education should nourish the spark of compassion, rather than building a larger and stronger shell around it. We want from our physicians and nurses a heart, a soul, compassion, righteousness, mercy and strength, rather than "a mind without a soul."

I don't know why the other answerer was going on about health care training...this quote is from The Chosen, and the father was trying to explain why he hurt his son in order to bring out his sensitivity. By bringing the son up in "the silence", the father forced the son to search inside himself to try to find answers and understanding. The boy already had a brilliant mind, but it was his heart and soul that needed to grow. Even if the boy did not grow up to become a rabbi, he could be righteous with the wisdom attained in pain. I think there's some truth to this; can anyone acquire depth from happiness?
