Pele is a Polynesian fire Goddess, in regards to mermaids they are believed to be mermaids that can live in the fiery waters around volcanoes. Usually pictured as mermaids with red and orange colors. I guess you could say they are more hot-blooded than regular mermaids.

oh....since everybody else answered with stuff like this I shall just say something random Pel'e is pronouced like pe (like pet) and le like (lei-flower lei-) She was the goddess of fires and volcanoes and mermaids were believed to live under the volcanoes.

But what confuses me is that Pel'e had a sister (I forgot the name) that was to represent snow (Big Island of Hawaii-Mauna Loa), and be Pel'e's rival in a sense. That Pele's sister was sorta of the ocean and Pel'e were the volcanoes as the two sisters kept fighting against each other and thus created new land. I don't understand how mermaids (which sound Western) could be tied in a more Pacific Islander type of myths and folklore

Pele is a fire Goddess of Hawaiian mythology, she herself is not a mermaid. However she immortalized the mermaid Pimoe, turning her into stone because she was jealous. I've not heard of Pele being connected to mermaids other then in this story.

Or maybe your referring to "... Pele merfish, with dark hair and eyes, bronze torso, and a fiery red orange tail." From _How_to_Catch_A_Mermaid.

A long time ago on a island in the sea, a goddess named Haumea, the goddess of the earth, had her child. One night Haumea saw thunder rolling in the sky, she knew it was time to give birth. The next morning Haumea's family saw a baby girl wrapped in tapa cloth. Haumea named her Pelehonuamea.

From the day she was born Pele knew she was different.

She had firey red hair and eyes and a quick temper. Her uncle, Lonomakua, the keeper of the flames saw that Pele was the one to whom he was going to teach his secrets. After Pele learned the secrets of the flames, her older sister Namaka, the goddess of water, forced Pele out of her home. Namaka said the island would burn if she stayed. So Pele set off with her dearly beloved brothers and sisters and found a new island called Hawaii.

On Hawaii she found that there was another god named 'Aila'au which means forest eater. 'Aila'au and Pele both wanted Kilauea to be their home. Pele knew that fire goddess never gives up. 'Aila'au and Pele went into a battle. They threw fire balls at each other. They erupted volcanoes to see who could let more lava and smoke flow out. In the end the skywas black from the smoke. The battle ended and the wind took a long time to blow the smoke out into the sea. When the air was really clear 'Aila'au was gone.

Pele had beaten 'Aila'au and lived in Kilauea. People who lived below Kilauea respect Pele.

the only Pele I know is Pele the Volcano Goddess, who rules the active volcano Kilauea in Hawaii. I don't think she's a mermaid, though...
