I was at an 18g, then I went to a 00g, then I took them out and shrunk down to a 4 g.
If stretching is done properly, I've seen people at 00 gauge shrink back down to a 16 gauge no problem. (This including the fact that they had no tearing though and never skipped any gauges.)
Here's some tips...
•Always give 2 weeks MINIMUM in between stretches.
Ideally a month or two is best.
•Never skip a gauge. This is the worst thing you can do. If you try to stretch it, and it wont go.
•Don't force it. You'll tear the ear and it may never heal properly.
•When stretching keep your ears well lubricated.Polysporin is a good idea.
•I like using metal tapers, but a set is very costly.
The best thing to do in your case is work down the gauges slowly, and be careful not to tear your ear. I would do it with regular Cbrs or circular barbells ( which are easier to change by yourself)
Unfortunately with the smaller gauges, they don't really sell cheap acrylic plugs, and stetchers untill you get to 10 gauge.
Your probably going to get stuck with buying cbrs and possibly if you can find any some surgical stainless steel plugs with rubber o's on them.
For the initial stretches, I'd use something that will allow for the swelling though. ( not that you'll have very much, there is only slight swelling in most people in the smaller gauges, ist 14 to 10 that you'll start to feel it)
If you go to a piercing studio, and buy the jewlery there they can do the stretch for you with proper metal tapers usuially free of charge. ( because you bought the jewlery there). Its always best to get a piercer to stretch for you, because they know when your ears are ready to stretch. They wont force them.
LoL. Everybody thinks that a 12 gauge is a massive gauge.

well, i had my ears gauged to a double zero and i took it step by step. id recommend going from an 18 to a 16 and so on and so fourth. ebay has really cheap plugs...i got 20 pairs for like $5.00. in between changing sizes wait until you think it is ok to go bigger. you'll know. but it does take some time. hope this helps!! <3

Those piercings are permanent and less corrected surgically and prevent people from hiring a person often times because they have to cater to the clientale not the employee. Think twice before you make a decision.

12G isnt that big at all so I wouldnt worry about it you can jump no problem....I look on ebay for Gages they are some times cheaper on there....I would atleast wait untill they are heald because I went from a 6G to a 0G on my ears one time and they got pretty nasty because I didnt wait to let them heal....and one other thing is....I would boil any tapers or gages before using them even if they are new.

It purely relies upon on your bodies tolerance for soreness. in case you attempt to I advise a good lubricant. even with a tiny stretch its brilliant to have one. and prefer all piercings keep it sparkling.

Why the hell would you want to do that? 1) it's hideous 2) I hear it hurts like hell...you need to go up one at a time...and if you're putting something in a hole that's going to stretch and possibly bleed, you don't want cheap ****..contact a tattoo/piercing place, they'll tell you what you need to know. .
