My Revelation:

It’s Sunday night, I’m sitting in-front of a Computer applying for various careers. It’s been a long week; I have been hopelessly trying to find a new career - which doesn’t seem to be getting any easier. I have written many letters, and put in countless hours of research. The work/research for a new career never seems to end, and I get the feeling that it just never will. It’s not really a pessimistic outlook; maybe it’s just me realizing that life is hard work. If it’s searching for work... well that's just it - it’s got to be a real job. But at the end of it all, what’s left? What do you get from all of this work? The fact of the matter is that you don’t really get anything substantial, nothing but self-gratification. That is of course, if you like, not even love, what you do.

So here’s my point, make sure you like what you are doing with your life. If you are in a job that you don’t like, don’t do it. If you are in a relationship that you are unhappy with, get out of it.

At this point in my life, I can only talk about what I have experienced thus far. For me, that means a few relationships, my best friend's.... I can remember myself wanting to go into careers that range from being an artist, a lawyer, a vet, or a writer. In high school, I really could have done whatever I wanted. I could have gone into anything, had I chosen to challenge myself with the classes. I could have gone into business, once again if I had challenged myself with the classes or I could have gone into general arts; the one challenge that I took both in high school and upon entering College. The problem is that there is a broad range of classes that you can take in the Arts faculty at any College, but as I quickly learned (amid the strikes), a College diploma won’t do a lot for you...

Instead, I want to do something that I enjoy. But what is that exactly? I like to draw, and paint, but that’s not really a career. I like to bike, and swim and do all sorts of things, but none of those are a career. So here’s the dilemma, I need to choose a career. At least that’s what everyone keeps telling me, indirectly of course....

That is where I leave off for now...

What? you don't think drawing and painting make a career? Guess again. There are many people who make their living doing just that. Commercial art is a wide open field, and perhaps that is what you should investigate.
You like to bike and swim, but that doesn't make a career either? Have you ever heard of life guards? of swimming instructors? Of phys ed teachers? of fitness instructors? The fitness industry is HUGE.
Your first instincts were correct. You should choose something that you enjoy, something that you would do whether you were paid for it or not. You have identified two areas of possible employment -- commercial art and the fitness industry. You may need more training to qualify yourself for a position in either of these fields, but that isn't difficult to do, either on a part time basis, if you can't afford to take the time off, or on a full time basis if you can swing it.
Follow your star, and don't let anyone talk you out of it.

It's true that a college diploma can't do everything for you, but having earned a diploma gives you more opportunities and job options. Nobody ALWAYS likes work- that's why we call it work and not fun but by sticking with a career plan through the hard times, you'll experience the rewards later in life. I'm planning to be a teacher and I love kids, but even I come home exhausted sometimes. Did you graduate from college? If so what is your major? I need more information to really answer this question.

The military has many different careers to offer.

Its an interesting life if you choose an occupation that's right for you.

And if you don't like it you get out after your first contract with money in your pocket, a great thing to put on a resume, and life experiences many will never have.

A career doesn't have to reflect your likes and dislikes. I'm in television, and I hate TV!! But it brings home the bacon. That's all. I'm not my job. That's not my identity, that's just what I do so that I can live my life the way I want. I get to do all the things that make me, me, outside of work; and that's what defines me. So just get a job, do your best, take some pride in it, and then do all the things that make you happy on weekends, on your days off, on vacation. Take time for yourself and realize that your job can be just income, not you.

someone beat me to it... who says drawing and painting isn't a career? my father is a painter, my cousin's in advertising... they'd made good in such... to bike, swim, now there's a career in those... coaching is not a career or teaching how isn't a career?

milady, choose on your strengths... where you find comfort, where you can focus, where you can deliver the most of what's in you, your skills, your talents. choose not a path you're unfamiliar with and go where your heart takes you... weigh the balance of educational knowledge and inherited ones, then follow it's road. each of us differs in what to advise you, but we are all in saying, go out and try anything that you find would suit your needs and wants. don't demand what you want, every step is made from small first steps...

Well have you ever thought about having your own business? It can be a hobby, but depending on the time and effort you invest, it can be a full time career. Give yourself a chance.... take a look at the website. I have my own business, if you need any info, let me know....
