I'm not sure which DVR Dish network comes with, but you can use the stand-alone Series I and Series II Tivo units with any TV source (cable, satellite etc) So your satellite receiver would be the conventional non-DVR type, and output would go from there to the Tivo.

On Ebay you can find units with lifetime subscriptions, so there are no monthly fees to pay. But the boxes themselves are expensive, since Tivo no longer offers lifetime subscriptions. There are standalone models like the Sony SVR-2000, too.

The best one I have seen as far as quality is the dish network one, too. I think the site linked below is giving away free ones with their set-up stuff too.
