You are no doubt thinking of Mary from the group Peter, Paul, and Mary. The song was done by them in 1969. John Denver also later did a remake of it. A Beautiful Song-!!

I think the Carpenters (Karen Carpenter) recorded the one I'm most familiar with but Chantal Kreviazuk and Peter, Paul and Mary (Mary Travers) also recorded it. It's also been recorded by men.

Try seeing if Wilson Phillips sing it, I am not sure, but that sounds familiar. That song has been done by so many people, I get them confused.
