The way to tell if a cable is a cross over cable is to look at the wires in the cable. Hold the cable ends up together (side to side, not end to end) and see if the order of the colors in the cable match up (you can see the colors in the very end of the cable). A direct cable will have the wires in the same order. A crossover cable will have the orange wires and green wires switched (there are two sets of each color of wire orange, green, blue, and brown). If these cables are manufactured (your uncle didn't make them himself), most crossover cables are red or orange.
To connect two computers without a hub, you will need a crossover cable. Both computers will need a network card and to be configured with an IP address.

A crossover cable is used to connect between computers. I forgot how to tell the difference. I think if you hold it up side by side the crossover has the orange and green switched. A rollover has the wires opposite. A straight-through has no difference. You will need a ethernet port, so yeah you probably will need to install a network card. Crossover connection is so much faster than wireless with less errors (from personal experience).

I assume these are ethernet cables? (Like phone cords, but thicker.) In which case it would be a straight-through cable or a crossover cable.
Take a good look at the colored wiring at both ends of the cable. A straight-through will have the same pattern at both ends, while a crossover will have the orange and green wires switched at one end from the other.
In order, the colors on a straight-through cable go: Orange-white (striped), orange, green-white, blue, blue-white, green, brown-white, brown. It is in this same order at both ends.
A crossover cable has the above sequence at one end. At the other, green & orange are swapped, as are green-white & orange-white.
I believe for a direct computer-to-computer hookup, you'll want to use a crossover cable.

Can't tell visually, did he tell you which is which?
Without hub go wiring; you need cross cable, you definitely need network cards installed.
A cross cable has a pair of copper wire switched in its place.
