You can't beat a good West End musical for glamour, fun and feel-good factor. Plus the buzz of being in theatre world
Best ones:
Evita
Mary Poppins
Chicago
Guys & Dolls
Les Miserables
Billy Elliot
The new version of the Sound of Music is coming in November.
Be prepared to pay a lot for tickets though - £30 to £60 average plus astronomical prices for programmes (tenner) and refreshments.
But it's worth paying more to see a good show than pay a lot of money to see something half rate.
Check out the online London Theatre Guide for lots of good info http://www.londontheatre.co.uk

I loved Avenue Q, but it's quite rude. I would go with 'Sunday in the Park with George', or if you are going for the whole 'West End' experience, probably something like Mary Poppins or Billy Elliot. Les Miserables if you don't mind crying at the end and can afford the top price seats.
Check out www.theatremonkey.com before you buy your seats, as they tell you which are the best seats in the house, which seats should be avoided, etc. www.whatsonstage.com also has some reviews of the productions and has a host of special offers on tickets too (as well as meal and theatre tickets combined deals).
Have a lovely time!

If you want to see something thats fun but also a tradition.... go see the Mousetrap....... phenomenal show and well worth the twist at the end.
As for musicals, if you have not seen Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera you must go.
If you like drama? Try any theatre like the Donmar warehouse or The National Theatre.

Went to see Tom Stoppard's new one, "Rock 'n' Roll", starring Rufus Sewell, Brian Cox, Sinead Cusak - pretty special.
If she likes musicals, Mary Poppins is an excellent production - it's my girlfriend's favourite film from childhood, so took her as a surprise. Even I was impressed (but don't tell anyone). The cast list says it's Scarlett Strollen playing Mary Poppins, but I think it was really MP herself.
I know "Sunday in the Park with George" is getting excellent writes-up, but don't know much about it.
If you like Shakespeare, check what's on at the Globe. The theatre itself is spectacular, and recent productions have been well received.

Well cats would be, but it's not on at the moment. So you could see Guys and Dolls (I've just seen it) it has Patrick Swayze in.
