Well if the check is made out to you, take it to thier bank and if he doesnt have enough money they wont cash it. If your worried of being embarrassed go through the drive thru. If his bank isnt near you i suggest you deposit it in your account but leave it in there for at least a week to make sure it clears, but if you are really worried tell the jerk to pay you in cash or a money order

If you are worried about the check, why did you accept it in the first place? Cash it NOW; if it bounces, he owes the bank AND you. You are only out the money he owes you. He's responsible to the bank.

You can call any bank to verify funds available if you hold the check. Go online find the bank's 24 hr CS number if one is available most automated systems will verify if funds are available without revealing the depositor's balance.

No, go to his bank and cash it! Then you know whether he has money in his account!

Deposit it in your account and when it bounces the bank will take your funds to make up for it and leave you the task of trying to collect!
