So far, I think Sleek has come closest to the truth. We become more alert when blood flows rapidly through the veins in our brain. Want proof? Drink a cup a coffee and see if you be come more mentally active. Of course you do. Why does caffine do this to us? It constricts our blood vessels causing the blood to flow through our brain more rapidly. When we "furrow our brows", we are attempting to squeeze the blood pressure in our brain to flow faster.

It mushes your brain cells together and they create heat which helps to bake up a better answer. You should have known by my use of the word "mushes" that I was full of it. But, you never know... that might actually be true.
