Drive letters are assigned by the operating system; A: is usually the floppy, B: is reserved for another floppy or similiar device; C: is most always the system drive (operating system resides here), after that anything goes. If the drive has been partioned, that is split into different segments so that the one drive has multiple drive letters, then you could have a C: D: and E: drive on the same hard drive. Have your mother right click on the E: drive in Windows Explorer and choose properties, then she can see if it is a hard drive or some other device. Best guess is she has a hard drive that has been partioned and the E: drive is getting full.

For every drive (or partition on the drive) there is a drive letter. So if your Mom's computer has multiple hard drives (or a drive with multiple partitions) it may have an E drive. It sounds like it is a hard drive.

The only drive letters that are a certain type of drive are A,B, and C. A and B drives have to be floppy drives, while C is usually a hard drive. Any other drives can be any other type of drive, for example, your D drive is probably a CD or DVD drive, but it could be a hard drive.

E drive is probably refering to the hard drive.
You must have 2 cdrom or dvd drives and then the hard drive
C and D for cd or dvd then E for hard drive. Thats if they are configured on the master IDE on the motherboard.

Could have a external storage device plugged in and its E.
Default hard drives are set for C:
