This has to do with the "cut" of the stone. Multi-faceted means many "faces" or cuts... it makes a stone sparkle more when the light hits it.

Multi faceted applies to gems. It means how many cuts there are to form the stone for use. Example - the old fashioned mine cut has way less facets than the brilliant cut of today though both are beautiful stones and glissen in the light.
It takes a person with great talent to cut a stone with facets with something that looks like a little hammer and chisel.

multi faceted means many faces, like a diamond has up to more than 100 facets on it. it is done on a diamond grinder, it takes a grinding surface that is made of diamond dust to cut and polish a diamond since it has the highest level of hardness on the mohes scale. look for a copy of the magazine Lapidary Journal, its a fascinating process.

Multi-faceted means literally "many sided." As for jewelry, the many sides are referred to as the number of cuts a jeweler made in your diamond, sapphire, ruby, emerald, etc.
