I can remember right before I turned 3 because I remember sneaking a taste of icing off the cake at our new house, and I remember moving in to the house, which was before I turned 3. But why can't people remember when the were babies, or in their mothers womb?

Because our brains aren't developed enough yet. That's why most peoples earliest memories are about age 3. Some people do claim to remember things earlier but it's debatable.

I have always been told it is because of word association.

Since one doesn't really get to learn words until 3 years old, it's very hard to remember things that you can't place a name on.

For example "Pink Duck" if you don't know what a duck is or the color pink, you can't really place a post it note on it for your brain.

Whether this is true or not, is totally another thing :)

According to memory "gurus" and recent brain research articles, human beings DO remember EVERYTHING they see, touch, feel, hear, think, dream, etc. in their entire lifetime.

The problem is, RECALL. The brain is a complex web of muscles, and like any muscle, if left un-exercised, certain parts of the muscle will not function properly.

Since we don't practice recalling the memory every day or even often, we tend to NOT recall those items, and we lack the focus and know-how to recall.

Hypnotists (although I don't believe in them), have been successful in helping people recall memories from as early as birth. Government agencies such as FBI, CIA, NSA have used them to bring back buried memories to solve crimes and gather information. What's shocking is that the memories recalled are so vivid (like color of the walls, the patterns on the dress of your mother when she gave your first bath, etc.), it's freightening.

I remember being in my crib, the lambies on my crib, and going for walks around the block , I can remember what the streetlights looked like from my stroller! But really earlier memories must fade away because our brains aren't very developed for long-term memory when we're infants.

Because God planned it that way. Maybe he knew that many Mother was going to go have their babies ripped out of their bellies like trash, through abortion, so he made it so the baby would not know. When you reach three by then you know your wanted and loved, this is how it's suppose to be anyway.
