Ancient history is from the period of time when writing and historical records first appear, roughly 5,500 years before the Birth of Christ. For some, the discovery of agriculture, roughly 6,000 BC is the beginning of ancient history. The most common date for an end of ancient history in Europe is AD 476 (the fall of the Western Roman Empire), however the exact date is still disputed among various historians. In Europe ancient history was followed by Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Ancient history would be old history. You have prehistory which is anything that happened before writing or painting. Then there is ancient history which is recorded in some form, but is too old, and the sample too small, to be dated accurately. We just know it's very old. Then we have history which are recorded events which we can date relatively accurately. Finally, we have modern history which is recorded in modern language. Those are unofficial divisions because the experts can't or won't agree on a specific time for any of it.
