I am extremely afraid of children and have to physically get up and leave the situation. If a child walks too close to me, I literally have a full blown panic attack and freak out and leave the vicinity. This happens no matter what, and the fear is uncontrollable. I have no control whatsoever to my fear and and have no control whatever to my extreme anxiety.

Tonight, for example, I went out to eat with a friend. He and I were sitting down waiting for out meal to be served, when two children walked right past our table. My friend noticed that I became extremely agitated and tense, and then when my anxiety reached an intolerable level I bolted from my seat and quickly walked to the register to get my drink.

We were there for almost an hour and I literally zoned out and could not carry on a lucid conversation. I was tense the whole time and my anxiety was not relieved until we left the establishment.

Why causes this unnatural and unhealthy fear, and is it normal?

I'm assuming your not full of s#@% . Is it only children of a certain age range or just children in general? Have you always been this way or did it start suddenly? It's definitely some sort of phobia but you'd need to do some self discovery work to look at the cause. Rarely would something this specific just be lumped with other phobias like heights or snakes b/c those have an obvious trigger (they could be dangerous). Children however are by nature the opposite of this (vulnerable, weak, loving). At best you need to learn to lessen the anxiety b/c it would be nearly impossible to avoid all children, everywhere forever.

Phobias are extremely common (while fear of chlildren might not be in the top 5) - but I know its not unheard of. I agree that its unhealthy - an unhealthy reaction (or over reaction). I deal with that & my extreme fear of heights. It's awful! Get some help from someone who specializes in phobias. I know from experience its not fun to live life this way. Good luck!

Usually people with anxieities have had some sort of traumatic experience that put them on the track to attacks.

I suggest that you contact a good counselor to talk about this. You don't need to take medication, just go back into your life thought talking to see where it began and why. This will help you to work it out. This is not normal, as you well know.

That is a very unnatural and unhealthy fear as you put it . There's no such thing as fear of children. Maybe some time in your childhood, you were abandoned by myself. And you are relating to this experience. You should be more exposed to children to overcome this fear. Don't you have nieces and nephews and friends' children.? Children can bring such delight to you. And the candid comments that they make are priceless. I don't have a dull moment with my grandchildren. They are like sponges. They are very impressionable. You can teach them a lot of things. And I'm sure you may learn a lot from them.

Remember that you was once a kid also. Kids are great, they are not something that can hurt you or anything, they are from God. A gift! Maybe if you was to go talk to a doctor about this problem. I have never heard of this before and it sounds very scary to. Never act out on your fears of children. Do not hurt a child because you are afraid of them please.

Did something happen to you as a child that would possibly be contributing to this? I'd go see a psychologist if I were you. They should be able to clear things up a bit.

You definitely need to see a doctor and be on some medication. When you are afraid of them, what exactly are you afraid of?

Like other extreme phobias, it is not normal. I would suggest seeing a counselor.
