hi,does anyone know the mechanism in the esterification of salicylic acid to form oil of wintergreen?like its synthesis or something

Yes. An ester is what you get when you react an organic acid with an alcohol. We did this experiment at school when I was teaching chemistry. I think the alcohol was ethanol, but it might have been methanol.You also add concentrated H2SO4 to absorb the water produced. Then you neutralise the aqueous acid with a base like calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate. You'll notice the smell of oil of wintergreen straight away.

Salicylic acid, on treatment with methanol in presence of an acid gives an ester, methyl salicylate which is popularly known as oil of wintergreen.

Since a carboxylic acid (salicylic acid) reacts with an alcohol (methanol) to produce an ester (methyl salicylate), this process is an esterificatin.
