You might not be getting a good spark from the spark plugs because they're old. Fuel mixtures with a high amount of fuel are easier to start. That's why it will start if you dump fuel into the carb. How are you testing your battery? Voltage isn't as important as amps. Try swapping the battery or boosting it from another car. If that doesn't work, i'm sure it's the fuel pump or the regulator. Check the fuel line pressure from the nozel on the fuel rails. If you press on the pin in the center, gas should squirt out about a meter high, else the pressure is low. That's a tough situation. best of luck!

If it is getting fuel then why would it start when you dump fuel into it. I would definitely look into the fuel system better. Fuel pump? Try tapping on the fuel tank or wherever the pump is located. Sometimes this works to get the pump going again for a short time

it sounds like the fuel pump..it is located under the back seat in the gas tank..you have ran the battery down by trying to start it. recharge the battery. and change the fuel pump..if it starts when you pour fuel in the carb then it has to be the fuel pump. im a mechanic.

dude just buy a japanese car. they are very reliable. i had a 1993 corolla and it lasted so long i got bored of it. it may be more expensive but it will eventually pay for iself because u wont have to be fixing it as much. also gas aconomy is much better. u should just buy a brand new toyota yaris or prius if ur on a budget and believe me wen i tell u that thing will last u half a lifetime. oh and about fixing the escort for now, i think its probably finished for good. probably needs oil. so shop through consumer reports magazines.

i own a repair shop,,and what i think might have happened to your car is the fuel pump relay went out on it,,its not pumping enough fuel to keep it running,,and the fuel pump on this one is in the tank on it,,,,its either that or the pump went out,,or the fuel filter got so clogged on it that it cant get enough gas to run,,don't worry,,its not dead yet,,try having the pump,,and relay checked on it,,i think you,ll find it to be one of these things,,i do this all the time for a living,i hope this help,s god luck with it.

90% SURE ITS YOUR FUEL PUMP!
Well, it can also be the carburator float & needle assembly that got jammed closed, not letting the fuel to come in the carburator.
As you said, if you put fuel directly over the carburator it will start (BE CAREFUL WITH THIS- don't pour gas while trying to start or you may get your hands burned).

Your car died of old age.
Advice: Dump the 17-year-old car and get a newer one.
It's not like we're talking a "classic" here, it's an escort for goodness sake!
Your car is probably worth more in scrap than what you'll be spending on parts.
